Data, Data, Data…
Flood mapping and interrogation of data can help with the issue of flooding in a number of ways.
Flood mapping can identify areas that are at risk of flooding. This information can be used to:
Design SuDS systems to protect these areas.
Evacuate people from these areas in the event of a flood.
Provide flood insurance to people who live in these areas.
Interrogation of data can help to understand the causes of flooding. This information can be used to:
Develop more effective flood mitigation strategies.
Improve the design of SuDS systems.
Raise awareness of the risks of flooding.
For example, flood mapping can be used to identify areas that are prone to flooding due to their low-lying elevation, proximity to rivers or streams, or history of flooding. This information can then be used to design SuDS systems that will help to protect these areas from flooding.
Interrogation of data can also be used to identify the factors that contribute to flooding. For example, data on rainfall, land use, and drainage can be used to understand how these factors interact to cause flooding. This information can then be used to develop more effective flood mitigation strategies.
By using flood mapping and interrogation of data, we can better understand the risks of flooding and take steps to mitigate these risks. This will help to protect people and property from the damage caused by flooding.
On new projects were able to provide a service that uses multiple data sets and modelling to clearly identify ‘hot spots’. What’s really important here are not the areas that will flood but the critical points where well designed, unobtrusive, inexpensive interventions can alleviate the flood risk at source. A logical step that enables practical solutions to put the right interventions in the right place!
This data led approach enables us to understand where to intervene and to what extent. We have great examples of where and how this information has been used on new pioneering projects in the UK. Please contact us for more information.
Here are some specific examples of how flood mapping and interrogation of data have been used to help with the issue of flooding:
In the United Kingdom, the Environment Agency uses flood mapping to identify areas that are at risk of flooding. This information is used to develop flood risk management plans and to provide flood warnings to the public.
In the Netherlands, the Delta Programme is using flood mapping and interrogation of data to develop a plan to protect the Netherlands from flooding. The Delta Programme is one of the most ambitious flood protection projects in the world.
In Australia, the National Flood Information System (NFIS) uses flood mapping and interrogation of data to provide flood information to the public. The NFIS is a valuable resource for people who live in flood-prone areas.
These are just a few examples of how flood mapping and interrogation of data can be used to help with the issue of flooding. By continuing to develop and use these tools, we can better protect people and property from the damage caused by flooding.
